We have all heard about having a dash camera. But what actual benefit do they bring you except the potential to be able to catch funny videos?
Well it turns out – a lot. Not having one could really leave you at a disadvantage. Why risk it – read on to discover what you are missing out on!
Dash cameras provide safety in numerous ways which I will cover further in the blog. One way they do keep you safe which many people don’t actually take into consideration is the fact that they actually provide impact resistance. It may only be a slight contribution but studies have shown that cars with a dash cam installed were much safer than the ones without. A dash cam records footage of your day to day travels and as so lets you watch back the footage in case involved in an accident. This allows you to evaluate how you were driving and also allows you to pick up on things to look out for in the future.
This is a benefit that will appeal to a number of users. Especially people under the age of 25 who may be looking to get there first car. The great thing about the dash cam is that insurance companies view them in the same light as black boxes. However, what puts so many young drivers off with black boxes is the fact that there constantly being watched. The dash cam however is something that only you control and only you see the footage unless you want to share it yourself. The RAC currently offer £30 off car insurance if you have an RAC dash cam. Swiftcover offers dash cam insurance discounts of 10%. AXA believe that drivers will be more responsible on the road if they have a dashcam installed in their car. They now offer a generous 10% discount on their car insurance for drivers who have a dashcam permanently fitted in their car.
Dash Cams are renowned for being very sensible pieces of kit and so they should. However, if we look beyond the obvious benefits at the end of the day the dash cam is still a camera. If you’re driving along and you see something bizarre and funny like a giraffe loose from the zoo you can capture it on video with your easily accessible dash cam. If you’re going on a family trip you can detach it from your car and use it as a camcorder to record all those fantastic memories.
The main aim of the dash cam is to protect you. When I say protect I don’t mean literally save you from a beating, I mean in court. You may be one of the lucky ones who has not been a victim to fraudulent claims but it is something that happens all the time on a very regular basis. People have an accident, it wasn’t their fault yet the other driver won’t accept liability, there’s no witnesses and no evidence to show what really happened. That is where the dash camera comes in. It can provide you with the proof of exactly what happened so when you get asked that question you can simply play the video and it will speak for itself, then the driver whose fault it was has nowhere to hide!
As well as it protecting you against other drivers It has actually been proven that people who own a dash camera as a result, drive much better. The reason for this is because when you have one installed you are well aware of the fact that you do. You almost subconsciously drive as if you are 17 again taking your test. This then leads to saving on fuel, extending the life of your car & dramatically reducing the risk of ever being in an accident.
